Sports Injury Testing

The Sports Injury Test (SIT) measures several important factors relating to an athlete’s strength, coordination, and body alignment. This compilation of tests compares the athlete’s performance to a large research database of over 800 female athletes. The database is used to understand factors which may predispose an athlete to injury. These tests also provide information that allows assessment of hip and core strength stabilization.

SIT will include:

  • Lower extremity screen by a licensed physical therapist
  • Video analysis of jumping and landing mechanics
  • Double- and single-leg squat assessment
  • Functional hop testing
  • Double-leg vertical jump testing
  • Single-leg vertical jump testing
  • Issued personalized report of results

The test takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes and is given at the beginning and end of each Sportsmetrics training program. The pre-training test provides baseline information for participants to benchmark progress and allows the training to be tailored to the individual athlete’s needs. The post-training test gives each athlete a tangible record of improvement. Each participant is provided with a personalized report of their results. The Sports Injury Test is included in the Sportsmetrics Technique and Training program and can also be performed as a stand-alone test to assess an athlete’s injury risk and baseline performance.

Video Analysis Reporting

Below are two photos of an athlete completing the drop-jump test and how we utilize our biomechanical video analysis software to quantitatively assess hip, knee, and ankle joint positions throughout the various phases of a jump. The first picture is the athlete’s baseline test prior to enrolling in the Sportsmetrics training program, whereas the second picture is her post-program results. You can see the drastic changes in lower extremity alignment between the two pictures due to improved strength and neuromuscular control gained by the athlete during the 6-week training program.

Sportsmetrics™ Technique and Training

Sportsmetrics Techniques and Training is the foundation upon which sports-specific skills are built. Training builds from technique development to performance enhancement. This 6-week program was scientifically proven to significantly reduce the risk of serious knee injuries in female athletes while improving hamstrings to quadriceps strength ratio and jumping height. It combines a dynamic warm-up, plyometrics, strength training, and flexibility.

Training group will meet 3 times per week for 6 weeks for a total of 18 sessions, as well as for pre- and post-testing. Each session is approximately 60 to 90 minutes and includes the following components:

  • Dynamic Warm-Up: Prepares the body with functional based activities that use sports-specific motions. It raises core body temperature, increases blood flow to the muscles, and improves flexibility, balance, and coordination.
  • Plyometrics/Jump Training: Plyometrics, the core of the Sportsmetrics program, are used to focus on correct jumping technique and are divided into three two-week phases. Each phase has a different training focus and the exercises change accordingly. Plyometrics develop muscle control and strength that are critical for reducing the risk of knee injury and increasing jump height.
  • Strength Training: With emphasis on body alignment and form, Sportsmetrics provides structured yet adaptable strength training guidance. This section focuses on development of core strength and improving overall muscular efficiency. This can be done with or without equipment or free weights.
  • Flexibility Training: Stretching is essential to achieve maximum muscle length, allowing muscles to work with power through complete range of motion. This is important for decreasing injury and post-training muscle soreness.
  • Pre- and Post-Testing: Detects deficiencies and identifies athletes who may have an increased risk for serious knee injuries. Testing includes drop jump test, hop test, single-leg squat, vertical jump, and hamstring flexibility.
